Configure Audience Segments User Guide

To get more granular views of your audience, configure Audience Segments by setting rule conditions based on your metadata, url variables, and/or element IDs.

Reminder: you must have the Quantcast Javascript tag implemented on your site.

Here’s how to do it

Wizard:

  • Use the Wizard—automatically create a rule by selecting the metadata you want to collect across your site (popular metadata events include page titles, authors, and keywords).

Manually:

  • Do it manually – configure rules by entering conditions using URL variables or element IDs.
    • If you’re using a single page application, Select Enable URL tracking for Single Page Application and use the “Create Manual” option to configure conditions to capture data when your URL updates.  If you don’t know, check with your web developer before enabling the setting.   To enable, check the box!

1

Using the Wizard

  • Enter a specific URL from your website to scan for metadata
    • For best results, use a page other than your homepage. These pages tend to have more useful metadata.
  • Select “Scan”

2.1

  • Steps 2 and 3 show all the metadata from the page you scanned (e.g., title) and content (e.g., Audience Insights & Advertising Analytics).
  • Select “Create Rule” next to the metadata you want to capture
  • Select “Done”

3

  • Finally, you’ll see the rules table, which includes the metadata rules configured from the selections you made in the Wizard.
  • These rules will remain “modified” (i.e., unactivated) until you publish them using the “Publish” button in the top-right area of the page.

2

Don’t forget to Publish your rules before you go.  Simply select “Publish” in the top right, the rules will be published to your site in about 15 minutes.  To check that your Audience Segments are set up correctly, download the Quantcast Tag Inspector Tool, load your web pages, and hover over the Quantcast logo to see the Audience Segment firing.

Create Manually

  • Select “URL, domain, and element rules”
  • Enter a name that corresponds to the pages e.g. Homepage
  • Configure rule conditions by defining variable, operator (starts with, ends with contains, doesn’t contain), and entering a value
    • Any time the condition is met, the data will be collected under the rule name and displayed in your account.
      • Use the table below to determine the correct configuration

How to Delete and Edit

  • Select “Delete” next to the rule and then select “Publish”
    • The status will change to “Deleted” once you select “Delete”. Next, make sure to select “Publish” to stop the rule from firing.

  • “Edit” will populate the create manual screen—update the name and/or condition to adjust the rule.
    • Helpful tip: By adding a condition to a metadata rule, you may limit where the rule fires. A good example is if you have an account with more than one site.
    • By configuring a condition to limit the rule to one site, you may update the name to “site.rulename” to build a hierarchy in your Quantcast account.
