How we collect data

IRI has two primary data sources for media targeting and measurement: POS store scanner data and Household Panel data.  The Multi-Outlet Tracking Service tracks point-of-sale (POS) scanner sales and promotional activity for 85,000+ stores in the U.S. across grocery, drug, mass merchandisers, club stores, dollar stores, Walmart, convenience stores, liquor stores, pet stores and Military.  The IRI Consumer Network™ consists of 100,000+ active household panel members. The panel uses an in-home scanner or mobile scanning application to provide their purchase and shopper information. IRI applies proprietary analytical tools to measure the Consumer Network purchase data to assess volume and share level trends based upon what is happening in the home: who is buying, where, how often, the level of brand and retailer loyalty, and the impact of shopper promotions. The Consumer Network is longitudinal providing the complete view of the consumer.
