Name: Julie Crew
Title: Software Engineer
Recent Awards/Honors: Thor’s Hammer, a weekly award recognizing accomplishments of members of the Publisher team
What’s been your career journey at Quantcast?
I started at Quantcast almost four years ago and have been on the Publisher team the whole time I’ve been here. When I was hired, I was a front-end developer and had been a front-end developer for 14 years. Over the course of the past year, I have been learning the full stack, AngularJS, the ins and outs of DevOps and AWS. Most recently, my team has been applying the “Lean StartUp” philosophy to our product. We’ve all been learning how to develop and test our hypotheses and interpret the results of our experiments to help incrementally improve our product.
What’s unique about your position at Quantcast that you couldn’t get anywhere else?
Quantcast has provided me with many opportunities to deepen the skills I already had and to learn many new skills and technologies with the support of my fellow engineers. I am lucky to work with so many talented engineers in a very collaborative environment. We get to learn new technologies and support modern browsers, so we are always challenged and engaged with our work. This is the first company I’ve worked for that has invested so much in my individual growth and development as an engineer. As someone who has a B.A. in English rather than a computer science degree, working here has allowed me to learn computer science fundamentals and gain a deeper understanding of all the technologies I use. I am a much better engineer because of all of the support and opportunities the company has given me.
Share a quick story that exemplifies why you like working at Quantcast.
Our recent redesign of the profile pages was challenging because we were all learning AngularJS as we built them out. Additionally, we were continuing to support the existing version of the profile pages. We used an agile approach to plan and execute our delivery of a minimum viable product. We used a whitelist to hide our new version of the page from everyone but a few select users. Because of this, we were able to deploy our new profile page code to the production servers gradually as we completed features. This meant there was less pressure on us as our deadline approached, because we knew that our code had been published and tested in our production environment. The launch was a success and we’ve gotten great feedback on the new profile pages from our customers.
