One of the best parts about working at Quantcast is the amazingly intelligent, friendly and eclectic group of people we’re privileged to call coworkers. In the spirit of celebrating our unique culture and the individuals that contribute to it, each month we’ll profile an outstanding Quantcast employee you should know. This month? Crispin Flowerday!
Name: Crispin Flowerday
Title: Director, Mobile & Cross Device
Awards: 5-year Award, 2014 Q4 Bucket of Cats Award
What is your role and how long have you been working at Quantcast?
I’ve been at Quantcast somewhere between 5 and 5.5 years depending on how you count it (it’s complicated!). I’ve had various roles at Quantcast, but most recently I’m managing the engineering team responsible for building our mobile and cross-device advertising products.
What is your favorite part about working at Quantcast?
How fast things change. You can’t bask in the glory of successes for very long — as soon as a product or feature is complete it needs continuous improvement to maintain performance and speed as the company grows.
What is the most challenging project you’ve worked on at Quantcast?
Early in my time at Quantcast we changed the entire real-time bidding architecture to allow our modeling teams to run experimental code in production. During the transition we couldn’t take the infrastructure down for any time, so it involved some very carefully planned releases that ultimately replaced the entire architecture with zero downtime of the platform. The basic architecture is still the same four years later, running many ongoing experiments, so ultimately the project was massively successful.
What are your favorite hobbies?
I recently got into running pretty seriously, and am racing the SF Marathon this year with plans to run a 50K later in the year. I volunteer regularly at the Crissy Field parkrun, a weekly, free, timed 5K run.
I’m also a keen skier (definitely not snowboarding), but snow has been terrible for a few years so I am thinking I need to start a new hobby of worshiping snow gods.
What is your favorite Quantcast snack?
Sweet and salty nut bars.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Anything that didn’t involve working at a desk.
What is your ideal Saturday?
Running in the morning, relaxing in the afternoon, and going to a bar in the evening.
I was the first employee of Quantcast outside of the US.
