More than 27,000 students shuffle off to Buffalo every year. The University at Buffalo (UB), founded in 1846 as a private medical college, is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, which it joined in 1962. The institution's original focus on medical education remains a primary mission, with schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. Students train at 10 local hospitals and health-care organizations. The university also hosts professional schools in architecture and planning, education, engineering, law, management, and social work.
