With about 50,000 students, it is the flagship institution of the UT System's nine universities and six health institutions. UT consistently competes with Ohio State and Arizona State for the top spot on the list of the country's largest student bodies. A research university that receives more than $600 million in grants and contracts annually, UT offers more than 100 undergraduate and 170 graduate degree programs. In addition to its Austin campus, UT maintains the McDonald Observatory in West Texas, as well as the Marine Science Institute on the Texas coast. The university was founded in 1883.
