Sanford Health (formerly Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System) offers medical services at facilities located in eastern South Dakota and surrounding Midwestern states. The system, established in 1996, operates some two dozen hospitals and over 130 clinics in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Its primary facility is the 500-bed Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which was founded in 1894. Specialty services include cancer treatment, orthopedics, rehabilitation, women's health care, and air transportation. In 2009 Sanford Health and MeritCare Health System agreed to merge in a move that would create one of the largest integrated health care systems in the US. [Description from Hoover's]
