an organization of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NOAA warns of dangerous weather, charts our seas and skies, guides our use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts research to improve our understanding and stewardship of the environment which sustains us all. [Description from dmoz]
The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has a huge mission - "to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment." As a steward of marine and coastal environments, it protects endangered marine species by regulating sanctuaries and managing the use of coastal areas. NOAA also provides information on ecosystems, climate, weather, water, and marine commerce and transportation. It supplies information on the state of oceans and the atmosphere through weather warnings and forecasts via the National Weather Service. Although NOAA was established as a part of the Department of Commerce in 1970, the agency traces its roots to 1807 when the Survey of the Coast began. [Description from Hoover's]
