HUD may not sound like a place you'd want to hang out but the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH) gives people a home. PIH provides safe, affordable rental homes for low-income families, the elderly, and disabled. It funds 1.3 million public housing units operated by about 3,300 housing authorities. PIH programs include those for family self-sufficiency, home ownership, and the demolition of run-down public housing. Its departments include the offices of Native American Programs; Public and Assisted Housing Operations; Public Housing Investments; and Policy, Program and Legislative Initiatives. The agency was created by the US Housing Act of 1937. [Description from Hoover's]
