Part of gigantic British bank HSBC Holdings, HSBC Finance issues credit cards to middle-class consumers in the US, with a focus on those with less-than-stellar credit. Offering Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards, as well as private-label cards for retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, and Saks; it has some 20 million cards in circulation. However, after the company experienced a rash of delinquencies and defaults on subprime loans that it acquired in the secondary market, as well as on those it originated itself, HSBC Finance stopped offering home mortgages and refinancing loans, automobile loans, and personal loans in 2009.
