St. Francis himself may have hailed from Italy, but his followers look after the health of the residents of the South Puget Sound area through the Franciscan Health System. The not-for-profit system's oldest and largest hospital is St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, a 320-bed facility founded by the Sisters of St. Francis in 1891.
