Ivy isn't always green -- particularly when it's Brown. Founded as the College of Rhode Island in 1764 and renamed Brown University for benefactor Nicholas Brown in 1804, the Ivy League school is one of the oldest universities in the US. About 8,000 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students have nearly 100 programs of study at their disposal, taught by more than 650 faculty members. Ruth Simmons was sworn in as president of the university in 2001, the first African-American to hold such a position at an Ivy League school. Brown University is expanding beyond its College Hill location. In 2006 it announced the purchase of seven buildings in Providence's Jewelry District for future expansion. [Description from Hoover's]
